Privacy and Confidentiality in Healthcare
×

Ethics of privacy and confidentiality dictates how healthcare practitioners should handle the information shared by their patients. Any exposure to the medical records of patients without their consent can dent the corporate image and lead to expensive lawsuits. An article posted by American Medical Association (AMA) examines privacy rule ratified by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and how healthcare providers can uphold privacy and confidentiality (Zarefsky, 2021). Understanding the ethics of privacy and confidentiality can help healthcare practitioners to maintain good relationships with patients and promote quality care.

Patients are more likely to openly share their healthcare information with their physicians or any medical professionals, whom they believe will uphold a high level of privacy. Zarefsky (2021) states that any disclosure of information of the patients without their consent can affect the willingness of the patients to seek healthcare services in the future because of the loss of trust. Privacy is the extent of control that health care practitioners have over the information shared by the patients. Practitioners are required to uphold a high level of control and protection to limit any unauthorized access to private information. On the other hand, confidentiality is about ensuring that the information shared by the patient is captured and secret in relation to their expectations (Zarefsky, 2021). Putting in place adequate measures in place can help to counter the problem.

Healthcare facilities are required to have elaborate measures for the protection of health information. Zarefsky (2021) points out that privacy policy can guide healthcare practitioners on how they should monitor and share patient health information (PHI). Apart from measures set by an organization, healthcare practitioners are also required to have their own guidelines on how to secure any information shared by their patients electronically. Any decision to share this information should align with the expectations of the patients and within their consent. The greater the sensitivity of the information shared by the patient should attract a high level of privacy and confidentiality..........................
