Alice Walker is an African American writer who has tremendously succeeded in authorship because of her different great pieces. As an author, she regards herself as a poet, story writer, novelist, and social activist. Walker was born in 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia, and she was the youngest in the family of eight children. She grew up at a time when racial discrimination was still very rampant in the U.S (Fembio.org. par. 3). As an African American child, she had to endure discrimination at school and had to attend a black school. Walker was an exemplary performer, and she completed high school at Butler Baker High School and became a valedictorian.

This experience made her develop a low self-esteem because she thought she was not beautiful compared to the girls. Secondly, when she was at Sarah Lawrence College, she became pregnant and procured an abortion. These two major experiences threw her into introspection, triggering her deep creativity in writing poems and stories. Apart from her personal challenges, Walker grew up in a hostile society as an African American because racism was all around her (Hamamra, Bilal Tawfiq 259). She witnessed how many people failed to realize the challenge she and other minorities were facing in society. These experiences and her later relationship with her horse enhanced her level of empathy for the suffering of others. This trait influenced her story Am I Blue and the famous quote, “Ain’t these tears in my eyes telling you?” because she noticed that many people fail to realize the pain of others until they find themselves in similar situations..........................
